Encholaimidae Golden & Murphy, 1967     

• Small nematodes, mostly < 1.5 mm long.
• Cuticle dorylaimoid; smooth or tessellate with both transverse and longitudinal striae.
• Lip region with 6 outer labial papillae that are cornuate or setiform
• Oral area elevated
• Amphids large
• Odontostyle very thin, odontophore rod-like or flanged
• Esophagus enlarged at middle or posterior third.
• Female gonad didelphic amphidelphic, monodelphic prodelphic or monodelphic opisthodelphic
• Males rare; spicules short and plump; 1-8 ventromedian supplements
• Tail in both sexes; conoid to elongate conoid, often with dorsally-curved tip
