Classification

                          Raphidascaroides nipponensis Yamaguti, 1941


Morphology and Anatomy:

  • Large-sized, yellowish brown to brownish color, some individuals >10 cm long.
  • Cuticle with fine, transverse striations.
  • Lateral alae absent.
  • Anterior with three long lips, approximately equal in size, with inconspicuous post-labial grooves and prominent lateral flanges; proximal part of each lip with four lobes; dorsal lip with two double papillae,
  • Ventrolateral lips each with one lateral amphid, one single papilla and one double papilla
  • Interlabia well-developed, about 25-30% of length of lips.
  • Eesophagus long, slightly broader posteriorly than anteriorly.
  • Nerve ring at about 10.0% of esophageal length; excretory pore just posterior to nerve ring.
  • Ventriculus nearly oval, slightly narrower than posterior region of esophagus; ventricular appendix relatively short.
  • Intestinal caecum absent.
  • Tail sof both sexes conical, tip with a number of very small nodular protuberances.

Male:

  • Gubernaculum absent.
  • Caudal papillae very small, 18-26 pairs in total; 14-22 pairs precloacal, one pair of paracloacal and 4-5 pairs post-cloacal .
  • Single papilliform, medio-ventral, precloacal ornament present
  • Phasmids present.

Female:

  • Vulva slit-like, located at 26.4-37.5 % of body length.
  • Vagina muscular, directed posteriorly from vulva
  • Uteri coiled posterior to vagina, extending posteriorly to level of rectum.
  • Lateral phasmids not observed.
