Oncholaimellus intersexus Neres, Da Silva, Miranda-Junior, Fonseca-Genevois & Esteves, 2014.

Species name based on the presence of one intersex individual among the descvribed specimens.

Morphology and Anatomy:

Female:

  • Female similar to male.
  • Didelphic, amphidelphic.
  • Vulva lnear mid-body (V=47%)
  • Four glands: two on each side of vulva opening.
  • Vagina sclerotized, surrounded by muscles.
  • Tail conical, 4.7× ABD, distal portion directed ventrally.

Male:

  • Diorchic, testes of unequal length, outstretched anteriorly;
  • Spicules slightly curved distally, about 1.8 × ABD.
  • Gubernaculum and bursa absent.
  • Four pairs of setiform papillae surrounding cloaca and two within the circle.
  • Three caudal glands extending anteriorly to cloaca
  • Tail conical (4.5× ABD) with spinnere.
  • Few caudal setae: two pairs of terminal setae

The basis for the species name:

One intersex was observed with male body characteristics, including spicules but no testes. Female reproductive organs and vulva present.

Distribution:

Free-living nematodes described from ocean bottom sediments (3-919 meter depth) in the Potiguar Basin offshore from States of Rio Grande do Norte and Ceara,  Brazil.
