Morphology and Anatomy:

Based on the characters of P. laterellus, the genus is characterized by:

  • a tessellated cuticle,
  • elongate labial tines
  • elongate prongs of the labial probolae forming a deep U-shape
  •  an elongate, swollen  metacorpus with a wide lumen,
  • short conoid tails
  •  spicules slightly longer than the anal body diam.

Ruiz-Cuenca and Abolafia (2020) separataed the species into two gropups; the laterellus group, with a lip region with two guard processes at both primary and secondary axils and shorter and more robust spicules, and the psammophilus group, with primary axils bearing two guard processes and secondary axils with one, and with longer and more slender
