Morphology and Anatomy:

Members of the subfamily Diplolaimellinae of the Monhysteridae are characterized by a double buccal cavity at some point during their juvenile or adult stages, while those in the other subfamily, the Monhysterinae, have a single tapered buccal cavity.

 

Females:

  • Monodelphic,  ovary branch outstretched anteriorly, not reaching cardia; on the right-hand side of intestine.
  • Postvulval uterine sac absent.
  • Vagina directed anteriorly; vulva a transverse non-citicularized slit posterior to midbody.

Males:  

  • Monorchic, testis on right-hand side of intestine.
  • Spicules paired and symmetrical, sarcuate, very long (2.1-3 x abd), curved ventral, with angular manubrium and cylindrical shaft, thin velum and lateral projections near their tips e
  • No midventral pre- or post- cloacal supplements.
  • Precloacal spine present, a short distance in front of cloacal opening.
  • Bursa well-developed, from anterior to cloaca to posterior third of tail.
  • Five pairs of genital papillae present: one pair just posterior to cloaca, three pairs near posterior end of bursa and one pair just behind bursa

Distribution:

Described from from the gill chambers of the mangrove crab Neosarmatium sp. cb, in the island of New Caledonia (southwest Pacific Ocean).
