 A species-rich genus of nematodes with ocelli (eye spots) (Croll et al., 1975).     

Type species of the genus: Araeolaimus bioculatus (De Man, 1874) De Man 1888

Morphology and Anatomy:

 
  • Cuticle smooth or finely striated;
  • Amphideal fovea loop-shaped with a rounded to slightly elongate outline
  • Buccal cavity narrow and conical
  • Pharynx with a bulb-like swelling at mid-length
  • Ocelli present;
  • Tail conical.

Females:

  • Didelphic, amphidelphic, ovaries reflexed
  • Vulva near mid-body
 

Males:  

  • Diorchic
  • Spicules about 1.5 x cbd
  • Gubernaculum with apophysis
