Malakhovia chernobyli Tchesunov & Gagerin, 1999

Type species of the genus:

Genus named in honor of Prof. V.V. Malakhov who sampled these nematodes in the cooling reservoirs of the Chernobyl. Atomic Energy Station in northern Ukraine.

Morphology and Anatomy:

With characteristics of the family Andrassyidae.

Body slender, elongate, spindle-shaped.
Cuticle very ÂŽ finely cross-striated; no lateral differentiation.
Cephalic end not offsetf from the body contour
Stoma small but distinct, weakly sclerotized, unarmed.
Circle of six tiny outer labial setae at level of the midstoma. Cephalic setae about 0.5 um long.
Amphids behind stoma, pocket-like, with relatively broad transversal apertures.
Pharynx with posterior oval muscular widening.

Female:

Amphidelphic, didelphic, genital branches long, paired, outstretched.
Uterus without hemi-rosette structure.
Uterus containing many small round bodies, evidently spermatozoa in the region close to vulva; no differentiated spermatheca present.
Tail elongate conical, gradually tapering to the acute tip. No caudal glands.
Oviparous.

Free-living freshwater nematodes. Malakhovia chernobyli described from specimens sampled by Prof. V.V. Malakhov in the cooling reservoirs of the Chernobyl. Atomic Energy Station in northern Ukraine.
