Epacanthion ampullatum  Lo Russo, Villares, Martelli, Pastor de Ward & Harguinteguy, 2012

    Synonyms:

The subfamily Enoplolaiminae is mainly marine but has some freshwater species. The subfamily is distinguished from the other subfamilies (Thoracostopsinae and Trileptiinae) by the three broad mandibles in the buccal cavity, each formed by of two rods with a thin membrane between them, and by a strongly sclerotized cephalic region with three lips and protruding cephalic setae (Lo Russo et al., 2012).

Morphology and Anatomy:

 

 

Male:

  • Body cylindrical with smooth cuticle.
  • Sclerotized cephalic capsule; lips Lips striated and composed of three sclerotized mandibles, each of two longitudinal solid bars with a thin membrane between them; mandibles expanded laterally in the proximal end with one tooth on each side. Two cusps with one small tooth on the distal end of each.
  • Each lip with two labial setae.
  • Ssix short and six long cephalic setae inserted at base of lips.
  • Somatic setae with no distinct pattern.
  • Esophagus cylindrical, long and muscular.
  • Diorchic, testes located at the left of the intestine, extending to the anterior region of the body.
  • Two short, equal spicules
  •  Gubernaculum triangular
  •  One long, tubular precloacal supplement.
  •  Tail cylindrical-conical in shape.

Female:

  • Didelphic, ovaries reflexed.
  • Body shape similar to male.

Described from littoral coastal region of Patagonoa, Argentina.
