Neotonchidae Wieser & Hopper, 1966

free-living marine nematodes

Sometimes considered a member of family Cyatholaimidae or as a subfamily of Ethmolaimidae Filipjev and Schuurmans Stekhoven, 1941

Neotonchidae - are nematodes of marine sediments.

Type genus of the family: Neotonchus Cobb, 1933.

Family Characteristics:

• Cuticle striated with transverse rows of punctations
• Cephalic sensilla arrangement in 3 circles of 6+6+4 (inner and outer labial (six each)  are papilliform and cephalc (four) are setiform.
• Amphids multispiral
• Buccal cavity elongate with large dorsal tooth, with or without subventral teeth.
• Esophagus with muscular posterior bulb
• Tail usually conical with rounded tip.
• Male monorchic with cup-shaped precloacal supplements.
• Reported worldwide.
