Phylum Nematoda
Class Enoplea
Subclass Enoplia
Order Enoplida
Suborder Enoplina
Superfamily Enoploidea
Thoracostomopsidae Filipjev, 1927, Lorenzen, 1981
from Nicholas (2007)
Additional diagnostic description by Vailas-Boas et al. (2015) and Zograf et al. (2025):
Three subfamilies have been recognized: Thoracostomopsinae, Enoplolaiminae and Trleptiinae. However, phylogenetic analysis of the family based on the nucleotide sequences of nuclear DNA did not confirm the monophyly of the last two subfamilies and of many genera (Zograf et al., 2025)..
Ubiquitous in the world's oceans. Generaly inhabit coarse sand in the littoral zone in areas with little detritus; also in the sublittoral zone among shells and coarse sand (Platonova and Galtsova, 1976; Zograf et al., 2025).
