István Andrássy 1927-2012

István Andrássy was born May 5,  1927 in Szolnok, Hungary. He passed away on August 4, 2012 at his family home in Budapest.

Dr. Andrássy studied at, and received his primary degrees and doctorate from, Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest.  He was awarded a higher level doctorate, the D.Sc. degree in Biology, by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1973, based on his dissertation on the evolution of nematodes.  For over 40 years, until his formal retirement, he was an educator and researcher at Eötvös Loránd University. His main major area of research throughout his career has concerned the evolutionary taxonomy, biology and ecology of terrestrial worms, especially Nematodes. He continued to be professionally active as a Research Professor at the university and serving as a member of the Systematic Zoology Research Group of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. A detailed chronology of his career is provided in Vinciguerra (2012).

Professor Andrássy’s international reputation emerged from his evolutionary approach to systematics and his extensive research and taxonomic contributions in all major groups of terrestrial and freshwater nematodes.  Indeed, he can be considered the originator of the current classification system applied to the Dorylaimida. Writing in Hungarian, German and English, Dr. Andrássy  authored around 230 publications during his scientific career.  He continued to produce several publications each year after his formal retirement from the university and more than 30 since achieving the age of 70!  His three volume series, “The Free-living Nematodes of Hungary”, published in 2005, 2007 and 2009, is is a remarkable compilation on nematode classification, including family, genus and species descriptions, and taxonomic keys. During his career he described at least 530 taxa of nematodes (Appendix I).  As a measure of the regard and respect with which he is held by the community of nematologists throughout the world, there are at least 51 taxa named after him and more continue to appear each year (Appendix II)!

Among Hungarian biologists, Dr. Andrássy is one of the most frequently cited in the international scientific literature.  Besides his voluminous contributions to nematode taxonomy and systematics, he has had an enormous influence on soil and nematode ecology.  Some of that influence is obvious and easily recognized, some is less direct.  Probably his paper that is most frequently cited by ecologists is that in which he provided a formula for calculation of the volume of nematodes.  That formula has been used in almost every paper in which determinations of nematode biomass are made. His 1984 book, entitled Klasse Nematoda, exercised major influence on the direction of nematode ecology in that it bridged the gap between nematode taxonomy and soil ecology. It provided a framework for many of the advances in nematode ecology of the 1980s and later that became the centerpiece of current directions in nematode faunal analysis and the use of nematodes as bioindicators of community structure and ecosystem services.

Dr. Andrássy published several important books in Hungarian, English and German. Among those that illustrated the breadth of his scientific contributions were:

  1. Evolution as a Basis for the Systematization of Nematodes. Budapest, London, San Francisco, Melbourne, 1976, 288pp.
  2. A Taxonomic Review of the Suborder Rhabditina (Nematoda: Secernentia). - ORSTOM, Paris, 1983, 241pp.
  3. Klasse Nematoda (Ordnungen Monhysterida, Desmoscolecida, Araeolaimida, Chromadorida, Rhabditida). - In: Bestimmungsbücher zur Bodenfauna Europas. Gustav Fischer, Berlin-Stuttgart, 1984, 509pp.)
  4. Kertészeti Növények Fonálféreg Kártevői. Agro-nematológiai Kézikönyv. – Budapest, 1988, 419pp. [Nematode of Horticultural Plants – A Manual for Agronematology] (together with Farkas, K).
  5. Free-living Nematodes of Hungary (three volumes). In: Pedozoologica Hungarica, Nos. 3, 4 and 5, Budapest, 2005, 2007, 2009..

Dr. Andrássy was reserved by nature and avoided public attention.  Interestingly, Dr. Andrássy seldom attended international meetings and, although he corresponded willingly and was very helpful and supportive, very few of the nematologists of his era, including prominent taxonomists, met him personally. His colleagues and students described him as a noble and kind man; they considered his friendship to have been a privilege.  Early in his career his ability to travel was limited, by geopolitical obstacles, to the countries of eastern Europe.  During that time, he became personally acquainted with the great nematologists of the former Soviet Union, including Paramonov, Kirjanova, Tulaganov, Baranovskaja, Eliava, and Krall. With the dissolution of the iron curtain, he took the opportunity to travel throughout Europe and also toured Africa and South America. Those experiences helped shaped the direction of his thinking and of his contributions to Nematology. Certainly, his contributions were not constrained by geographic or political bounds at any time during his career. He described and analyzed nematode faunae from at least 20 countries, representing every continent, including most of the countries in South America and many throughout Africa.  And he wass not restricted to specific environments; Dr. Andrássy  described taxa, and discussed the biology of nematodes, that inhabit caves, nature reserves, freshwater habitats and agricultural fields.

Interestingly, Dr. Andrássy was a descendant of the Hungarian aristocracy from before the monarchy was dissolved.  Indeed, Andrássy University in Budapest bears the family name.  Members of the Andrássy family were among the most important noblemen from the 18th century until the Second World War, including Gyula Andrássy who was Prime Minister of Hungary between 1867-1871.  Under earlier circumstances he would have been recognized as Baron Andrássy, a lineage which caused him some embarrassment at various periods during his life.  The family lost most of their proeprty after the Second World War.

At least ten doctoral students obtained their direction from Dr. Andrássy and many went on to occupy prominent and important positions in research and higher education in Hungary.

Dr. Andrássy was the Editor-in-Chief of the Hungarian scientific journal “Állattani Közlemények” (Zoological Proceedings) for 40 years.  He helped establish and has served as one of the editors of the journal “Opuscula Zoologica”.  He was one of the editors of the international journal “Acta Zoologica Academiae Scientiarum Hungaricae” between 1987 and 1993.

During his career, Professor Andrássy was recognized with many awards, including the prestigious Szkrjábin Medal of the Soviet Academy of Sciences (1983), the Academic Prize of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (1987), the prestigious Huzella Prize (1987) and the Gelei Prize (1998) of the Hungarian Biological SocietyHonorary Membership of the Helminthological Society of the Soviet Union was conferred on Dr. Andrássy in 1980 and Honorary Membership of the Society of Nematologists in 2007.
