Gregor William Yeates (1944-2012)

Gregor Yeates was born in Palmerson North, New Zealand in 1944.  He died on August 6, 2012.

Gregor attended the University of Canterbury and gained his bachelors degree with first class honours in 1966.  During the second year of his studies at Canterbury, the invertebrate zoology course included a week of lectures and laboratories by a Nematologist, Dr. W.C. Clarke.  Those lectures focused Gregor’s interests on nematodes. Dr. Yeates complete his PhD in 1968, under the direction of Dr. Clarke, on the ecology of nematodes in coastal sand dunes.  He was awarded a DSc degree by the University of Canterbury in 1986.

After completing his PhD, Dr. Yeates received a Nuffield Foundation Commonwealth Travelling Fellowship to spend a year in the Nematology Department at Rothamsted Experimental Station, England (1967-68).  Following that, he spent 1969-70 as a research scientist at the Mols Laboratory in Denmark.  There he was introduced to large-scale collaborative projects as a member of a team of 30 scientists who were participating in the Danish International Biological Programme. After those valuable international experiences, most of Dr. Yeates’ work, other than during sabbatical leaves, was conducted in New Zealand.  Between 1970 and 1992, he served as a soil scientist with the Soils Bureau of New Zealand’s Department of Scientific and Industrial Research in Lower Hutt. Subsequently, he was appointed as a Senior Scientist at Landcare Research New Zealand Ltd in Lower Hutt. In 1994, that laboratory was moved to Palmerston North where he continued to work as a soil zoologist

Dr. Yeates was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand (1998), a Fellow of the New Zealand Society of Soil Science (1995) and a Fellow of the Society of Nematologists (2007).  He gave invited presentations, and participated in joint research, in Australia, Canada, Costa Rica, Denmark, England, Germany, The Netherlands, New Caledonia, Scotland, Spain, Sweden, USA, and Wales.  He served on the editorial boards of Pedobiologia, Biology and Fertility of Soils, Russian Journal of Nematology, Applied Soil Ecology, Journal of Nematology and Nematology, and was called upon by some 40 journals to act as referee.

Gregor Yeates was a member of a number of professional societies including Society of Nematologists, European Society of Nematologists, Helminthological Society of Washington, British Ecological Society, New Zealand Society of Soil Science, Royal Society of New Zealand, Nematological Society of India, Japanese Nematological Society, Zoological Society of London, Australasian Association of Nematologists, Systematics Association of New Zealand and New Zealand Society for Parasitologists, of which he was president in 1990 and1991.

In the course of his ecological studies, Gregor Yeates described 105 new species in a number of unrelated genera, e.g., Longidorus, Xiphinema, Hemicycliophora, Trischistoma, Dorylaimellus and Iotonchus.  He was an extremely productive scientist with over 200 scientific papers and at least the same number of conference papers and reports (Appendix I). Within the field of soil ecology, he published extensively on nematode community structures and the influence of environmental and management effects upon them.

Dr. Yeates’ early introduction and experience in collaborative projectsinfluenced his research approach throughout his career.  His publication record reveals numerous studies in which he assessed nematode communities and monitored their changes in different cropping systems, environmental regimes, and with varying organic and pesticide inputs.  In his approach, he provided a role model for nematode and soil ecologists.  Data were never wasted and did not languish unshared in files; the research process from conception through implementation, analysis, and publication were completed in an enviably efficient manner.  All of the studies contributed to Dr. Yeates’ greater understanding of the role of nematodes in soil ecosystems.  The publication record reveals a pattern of system-specific faunal analyses followed by taxonomic descriptions and then synoptic papers of nematode survival, feeding habits, niche dimension, invasion biology or ecosystem services. A key and much cited paper that continues to be much cited by soil ecologists is that on the feeding habits of soil nemattodes and genera (Yeates et al., 1993).  That paper provided an important basis for the understanding and analysis of the roles of nematodes in soil ecosystems.

Gregor Yeates studied the ecology of nematodes, and other soil organisms, in environments ranging from Antarctica to northern Europe and in habitats that include sand dunes, pastures, forests, agricultural fields and vertebrate intestines.  He was truly a gifted and dedicated enthusiast.

Furher details of the career and life of Gregor Yeates are provided in Boag et al. (2012) and Mercer and Stirling (2012).
