           Diaphanocephalidae Travassos, 1920

A family of hookworm-like gastro-intestinal parasites of snakes.

  • Large, complex buccal cavity that is dorsoventrally elongated.
  • Stoma opening surrounded by a cuticular membrane.
  • A peri-oral groove inside the stoma opening connected with a dorsal groove in the buccal capsule wall.
  • Buccal capsule wall comprised of four pairs of sclerotized plates, two lateral, one large dorsal, one large ventral and two smaller dorsal and ventral plates

Intestinal parasites of reptiles (lizards and snakes). Snakes may become infected orally by 3rd stage larvae.
