Morphology and Anatomy:

Cuticle generally smooth or finely transversely striated, sometimes marked with longitudinal ridges. Subcuticle not striated..
Lip region offset or continuous with adjoining body; lips distinct or fused, bearing two circles of labial papillae.
Amphidial fovea stirrup-shaped with slit-like aperture.
Stoma thin-walled, with or without onchia or denticles.
Odontostyle axial of varying size and shape; usually relatively short.
Odontophore generally rod-like, rarely flanged at the base.
Guiding ring appearing single or double.
Esophagus generally in two parts: a slender anterior and an enlarged posterior part; posterior part with five glands.
Posterior, expanded part of esophagus not enclosed in a spiral, muscular sheath; usually about one half of esophagus length
Pre-rectum always present.
Female reproductive system didelphic or monodelphic.
Vulva transverse, longitudinal or pore-like.
Male reproductive system always diorchic.
Spicules generally arcuate, provided with central thickening and a pair of guiding pieces.
Before the cloacal aperture in males there is always a pair of ventral ad-cloacal papillae is always present and anterior to those, a row of ventromedian supplements, varying in number and arrangement.
Tail varying in shape and length, similar or different in the two sexes.

Families, genera and species of the Dorylaimoidea are mainly terrestiral, but many species occur in freshwater habitats.
