Genus named for Tom Bongers who revised the original genus Leptosomatides in Bongers (1984).

Morphology and Anatomy:

General characteristics of the genus:

• Cephalic capsule similar to Leptosomatides.
• Hypodermal glands present.
• Ocelli absent.
• Amphids large, elongate, posterior to cephalic capsule; no sexual dimorphism in amphids.   Caudal glands extend beyond rectum. Tail bluntly conical.

Free-living marine nematodes. 

Type species, Bongersia innocelata, described from the European Arctic ocean.
