Orthostrongylus Dougherty & Goble, 1946

Type species of the genus: Orthostrongylus macrotis (Dickman, 1931) Dougherty & Goble, 1946

Dougherty and Goble (1946) erected the genus Orthostrongylus for Protostrongylus macrotis Dikmans, 1931 which they considered to have aberrant features not found in typical species of Protostrongulus.

Distribution:

Type species (O. macrotis) described from Rocky Mountain mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus).

Biology and Ecology:

Larvae of  Orthostrongylus sp., probably O. macrotis, have been isolated from feces of reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) in Russia.  Orthostrongylus macrotis  is reported by various authores from moose (Alces alces), mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus), Columbia black-tailed deer (O. h. columbianus), and elk, or wapiti (Cervus canadensis) (Loginova et al., 2023).
