Siphonolaimidae Filipjev, 1918 (sometimes ascribed to Chitwood, 1937)
                
A family of free-living marine nematodes, often reported from extuarine and mangrove habitats. Includes some taxa that lack a mouth.

• Body generally long and slender. Anterior and posterior end round.
• Cuticle striated.
• Anterior sensilla variable; six + six + four in the subfamily Sipholaiminae and zero + six + four or zero + zero + four in the subfamily Astomonematinae.
• Amphids circular.
• One or two gonads may be present.
• Gubernaculum apophysis oriented dorso-caudally.
• Tail short

Two subfamilies:  Astomonematinae Kito & Aryuthaks, 2006 and Siphonolaiminae Filipjev, 1918

Subfamily Astomonematinae

• Body long, slender, cylindrical
• Cuticle transversely striated
• Anterior rounded, with zero + six + four or zero + zero + four head sensilla.
• Amphids circular,
• Alimentary canal degenerated; mouth opening, buccal cavity, pharynx and anus absent, rudimentary gut containing prokaryotic microorganisms.
• Reproductive system didelphic amphidelphic in females, afiorchic or mnorchic in males.
• Tail usually with rounded in females.

Subfamily Siphonolaiminae

• Cuticle striated.
• Anterior with Six + four cephalic setae at more or less the same level. Outer labial setae always shorter than the cephalic setae.
• Amphids circular.
• Wall of the buccal cavity tapering to a spearlike point at the anterior end.
• Esophagus widened posteriorly to the buccal cavity and at the posterior end.
• Female monodelphic.
