labial sensilla six, papilliform or not visible; outer labial and cephalic setae in two circles of 6+4
simple unispiral, loop-shaped, bowl-shaped or "shepherd's crook" amphids.
buccal cavity small, sometimes tubular usually without teeth but teeth present in some families
espophagus usually cylindrical and with but sometimes without terminal bulb.
Females diovarial.or monovarial opisthodelphic in family Axonolaimidae
Males diorchic or monorchic, with prominent tubiform supplements in some families.
Spinneret and caudal glands present
majority are marine or inhabit brackish water.
feeding habits of some are uncertain, but many are bacterivores and some may feed on algae.
Ocelli may be present.
