Classification:

Tylenchida
       Tylenchina
        Tylenchoidea
         Heteroderidae
          Heteroderinae

Heterodera filipjevi (Madzhidov, 1981) Stelter, 1984

A member of the Avenae group of Heterodera spp.

Synonyms:

    Bidera filipjevi Madzhidov, 1981

Review general characteristics of the genus Heterodera.

Cereal crops in the Republic of Tajikistan were found to be heavily infested by a cyst nematode during a 1978-1979 survey. The nematode was morphologically similar to Heterodera avenae but differed in some morphometric characters and the presence of an underbridge.  Madzhidov (1981) described the species as Bidera. filipjevi which was later moved by Stelter (1984) to the genus Heterodera. Subsequent morphological and biochemical comparisons of Heterodera populations from the former USSR, previously identified as H. avenae, revealed that most were conspecific with H. filipjevi.

Economic Importance:

Considered an important pest of cereals worldwide (Renco et al., 2018).  Grain losses of 42% reported in Turkey (Nicol et al. 2006)

10-40% yield reduction from all cereal cyst nematodes (H. avenae and H. filipjevi) in China (Cui et al., 2020).

A-rated pest in California Nematode Pest Rating System.

Host Plant Resistance, Non-hosts and Crop Rotation alternatives:

Many wheat cultivars are susceptible to Heterodera filipjevi, but cultivars Bam and Behrang have useful levels of resistance (Moatamedi et al., 2018).
