Four Subfamilies based on characteristics of the ovejector, buccal capsule and bursal rays:

 

Morphology and Anatomy:

Recent molecular evidence supports the hypothesis that the subfamilies Cloacininae and Phascolostringylinae, parasites of marsupials, should be moved from the Chabertiidae to the family  Cloacidae and thus separated from the strongyloid nematodes of non-marsupial hosts. Although additional studies are required, current molecular evidence supports the hypothesis that early radiation of the strongyloid genera in marsupials may have occurred in the marsupial wombats (Marsupialia: Vombatidae) (Sukee et al., 2022).

Distribution:

Strongylid infections of free-ranging marsupials are reported extensively from Australia  (Beveridge and Chilton, 1999; Beveridge et al., 2002; Spratt et al., 1991). They have also been reported as causing death of marsupials in zoo captivity (Sotohira et al., 2016).
