Morphology and Anatomy:

Females: Body stout, 0.23 to 0.50 mm long, straight or curved ventrally to form an open "C," bluntly rounded at both ends. 

Labial region distinctly set off from body with one large discoid basal annule, or with two annules, the first large and discoid. Submedian lobes absent. 

Stylet 50 to 89 µm long. 

Approximately 55 to 98 body annules, with scales arrayed in 8 to 16 longitudinal rows at midbody. Scales flat, smooth and rectangular, or semicircular or elaborately fringed with 7 to 10 setiform projections or continuous fringe of dense comb-like spines.

Males: Four lateral lines.

Spicules 31 to 34 µm long.

Caudal alae small; tail conoid

Juveniles: Described only for P. australe. Annuli with cuticular scales as in female, but each scale rounded and bearing small projections.
