The tail shape of X. dentatum varies among juvenile stages and adults. Conoid and ventrally curved with a cuticular terminal extension in juveniles to broadly rounded in adults. Similar variability in tail characteristics through developmental stages has been reported for other Xiphinema spp. e.g. the morphologically similar X. paradentatum (Barsi, et al., 2017)..
