Parapomponema hastatum Ott, 1972

Note: Parapomponema is generally considered a synonym of Pomponema Cobb, 1917. Characteristics like alternating rows of fine and coarswe puncttions are not considered sufficient to justify its separation from Pomponema (Cidreira et al., 2019).

Morphology and Anatomy:

Body very slender, tapering only very slightly towards the anterior end,
Cuticle with transverse rows of dots beginning from posterior margin of amphid. First rows single, changing soon to double rows of finer dots about 1.5 um apart.
Lateral differentiation consisting of two coarse dots per double row, about 12% of body diameter between mid- esophagus and tai tip.
Head with one circle of six labial setae 7-8um long and ten cephalic setae; the lateral single, 11 to 13 um long, the submedial in pairs, 11-13 um and 7.5-8.5 um long. Four short setae right behind the amphids
Pores distributed in sublateral position over the whole body, sometimes with short stout setae.
Amphids spiral, 3 3/4 turns in males, 3 1.4, in females,,53-54% of corresponding diameter) wide in males,38% in females, at level of base of the stoma,
Stoma with protrusible vestibulum, having strong ribs which support a delicate membrane, dorsal tooth large with acute tip; two smaller subventral teeth.
Esophagus weak, not dilated at posterior end, posterior end with big nuclei of the esophagcal glands, no cardia,
Iintestine cells indistinct, with clusters of brown granules. Pseudocoel filled with numerous cells.
Tail with several setae 4 um long, in sublateral position. Tail in males 3.1-3.4, in females 4.7-4.8 abd ong; conical in anterior portion, posterior third cylindrical. Three weakly developed caudal glands. Opening of spinneret terminal.

Males:

Diorchic, testes opposed, outstretched.
Spicula weakly cuticularized, arched, with median rod, 1.1-1.3 cbd long
Gubernaculum f a simple, slightly bent median piece and two lateral, L-shaped pieces,
Pre-caudal supplements, consisting of an outer plate and an inner plate, joined by a constriction.

Females:

Didelphic, amphidalphic; ovaries reflexed\
V at 59% of body length.

Distribution:

Collected in ecological investigations of the nematode fauna of a fine sand flat at Wrightsville Beach, north of Wilmington, North Carolina. Samples taken at various depths in the sediment at about the midtide level (Ott, 1972)
