Morphology and Anatomy:

The genus Neotrileptium has all the main characteristics of the family Thoracostomopsidae. It differs from all otherspecies of the genus that are propsed to be transferred fron the genus Trileptium in:

• the shape and position of the mandibular complexes (situated well forward in a spacious buccal cavity).
•  a very large body size (more than 20,000 um for N. unicum and more than 9000 um for N. gracilis.
• the presence of a pronounced circle of short cervical setae.

Note: Zograf et al (2025) recognize 3 groups of  the genus Trileptium: without armament, armament not well described, and armament of three mandibles and three teeth. They proposed moving all species in the third group to the new genus Neotrileptum.

Main characteristics of the genus:

• Cuticle smooth or slightly striated.
• Three low lips separated by shallow incisures.
• Three weakly-developed mandibles (one dorsal and two ventrosublateral) and  three teeth of equal or unequal size close to the buccal cavity opening.
• Pharyngeal glands open through the teeth.
• All anterior sensilla setiform, in three separate rings, outer labial and cephalic setae located close to the base of the cephalic capsule.
• Sub-cephalic setae inserted just posterior to the cephalic capsule, which are longer than the cervical setae, and are found in both sexes, scattered along the pharyngeal region of the body.
• Tubular precloacal supplement present or absent. Caudal glands stretch into the precaudal region..

Biology and Ecology:

Species of Neotrileptium are not found in high abundance. They are usually found in bottom sediments in both coastal and deep-sea ecosystems.

Zograf et al (2025) suggest that the limited  study of the nematode fauna of contributes to a ack of information regarding large predatory nematodes, including those of the family Thoracostomopsidae and species of Neotrileptium. Due to the low abundance of these large predator nematodes in an ecosystem, it is difficult to collect a sufficient number of mature specimens for accurate identification and detailed analysis.
