                        Aporcelaimidae

Makatinus crassiformis (Kreis, 1924) Andrassy, 1986

Morphology and Anatomy:

.

Female:

  • Moderately slender nematodes of large to very large size, 3.04-6.04 mm long.
  •  Cuticle two-layered, outer layer thin with very fine striations; inner layer much thicker and more refringent, with radial striations.
  •  Lateral chord wide, occupying 9-18% of mid-body diam.
  •  Lip region distinctly tapering, nearly truncate anteriorly and continuous with body contour.
  • Lips fused with buttonlike papillae.
  • Oral aperture a wide oval.
  • Amphid fovea funnel-like, with broad oval aperture  40-50% of corresponding body diam.
  • Odontostyle very robust, 1.0-1.2 lip region diam. long, dorsal arm conspicuously thickened at anterior third.
  •  Guiding ring simple, located a 0.5-0.8 x  lip region diam. from anterior end.
  • Odontophore simple, rod-like, 1.9-2.2 times longer than odontostyle.
  • Esophagus muscular, enlarging very gradually, with basal expansion occupying 49-54% of total esophagus length
    Cardia short, rounded conoid.
  •  Genital system didelphic-amphidelphic; uterus a simple, tube-like.
  • Vagina with  pars refringens vaginae consisting of two triangular sclerotised pieces. Two gland cells present, one anterior and one posterior to pars refringens vaginae.
  • Vulva a short, longitudinal slit.
  • Prerectum 1.3-2.8 anal body diam. long. Rectum forming a little shorter than  than 1x anal body diam.
  • Anus a transverse slit.
  • Tail very short, rounded to slightly conoid.

Males:
Probably unknown. Original description included males but those are now thought to belong to a species of Aporcelaimellus.
(Varela et al., 2017).

Distribution:

Originally described from Surinam.  The junior synonym reported and described from Costa Rica (Varela et al., 2017).

Feeding:

Probably similar to Aporcelaimellus: predators and omnivores (Yeates et al., 1993)
