Morphology and Anatomy:

Stichosome:

The pharynx is narrow and thin-walled anteriorly; posteriorly, is surrounded by unicellular, glandular stichocytes, each with a duct into the pharyngeal lumen. The pharynx  is almost devoid of musculature. The region of the pharynx surrounded by stichocytes is known as the stichosome.

 

Female:

  • Esophagus total length 7.0 mm, muscular portion 310 um long, stichosome 6.7 mm long with 44 stichocytes
  • Non-elevated vulva situated posteriorly at 500 um  from the esophagus-intestinal junction, 7.6 mm from cephalic extremity.
  •  Anus terminal
  •  Eggs with 2-layered wall and ornamented surface, polar plugs light colored, distinctly protruding;

Male:

  • Esophagus total length 4.65 mm, muscular portion 250 um, and stichosome 4.5 mm. with 45 stichocytes
  • Spicules in non-spinose sheath
  • Two paracloacal larteral lobes. joined dorslly by a thin pseudobursa fold. Each lobe with 1 or 2 papillae.
  • Caudal and lateral alae absent

Described from Oxymycterus rufus in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina.

Hosts:

Oxymycterus rufus (type host Red Hocicudo, a South American rat-like rodent), also reported from Akodon azorae (South American grass mouse - a vole-like rodent).
