Mermithids are frequently found as parasites of black flies. Their parasitism can result in behavioural changes in the host, tissue degradation, feminizsation, and steriliility of the hosts through deformation of the reproductive organs of both males and females That contributes to the natural regulation of black fly populations (Molloy 1981; Luzakova et al., 2026).
Note that river blindness (onchocerciasis) is spread to humans by the bite of black flies infected with Onchocerca volvulus. River blindness is the second leading infectious cause of blindness in the world. Human onchocerciasis is found in both the Old and New World but about 96% of all cases are in Africa and mostly in Western Africa.
