Life Cycle:

Species of Isomermis, Mesomermis and Gastromermis are parasites of black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae)

Life cycle of Mermithidae as parasites of black flies. Mermithid larvae, hatched from eggs, enter the body of a black fly larva. Both the black fly and its parasite grow. Subadult mermithids leave the host during either the host's larval or adult stage. Post-parasitic adult mermithids then mate and produce eggs.

Potential for biological control of aquatic insect pests (Kumar et al., 2023,

Mermithids are frequently found as parasites of black flies. Their parasitism can result in behavioural changes in the host, tissue degradation, feminizsation, and steriliility of the hosts through deformation of the reproductive organs of both males and females  That contributes to the  natural regulation of black fly populations (Molloy 1981; Luzakova et al., 2026).
