Longistrongylus Le Roux, 1931
Type species of the genus: Longistrongylus meyeri Le Roux, 1931
Synonyms:
Bigalkenema (Ortlepp, 1963) Gibbons, 1977
Bigalkea (Monnig, 1932) Travassos, 1937
Kobusinema (Ortlepp, 1963), Gibbons, 1977
The synlophe, a system of longitudinal cuticular ridges characteristic of some Longistrongylus species. Some speciers are characterized by a tapering pattern of ridges in the lateral region of the cervical zone (anterior to the esophageal-intestinal junction). That pattern is fairly consistent among male and female specimens. In contrast, the synlophepattern is parallel in Longistrongylus meyeri the lateral pattern is parallel.
The synlophe pattern is bilaterally symmetrical, with ridges extending from the base of the cephalic expansion to near the caudal extremity in males and females. Ridges are acutely pointed, with perpendicular orientation.. Species-specific patterns, including the number of ridges augment the array of diagnostic characters for species of Longistrongylus contribute to identification of female specimens (Hoberg et al., 2009)..
The genus Logistrongylus is characterized by:
Body filiform, with small head vesicle., lengths uo to 20 mm.
Cervical papillae small, more or less equidistant from anterior end.
Longitudinal cuticular ridges of synlophe numerous, of approximately equal height and symmetrically arranged. .
The vulva positioned in the posterior third of the body
Male:
Female:
Vulva in posterior third of body
Tail bluntly pointed;
Oviparous.
A pair of small rays on the ventral surface of the genital cone,

Many of the species recorded in the Gibbon (1977) revision of the genus were collected from host animals in central and southern Africa.
Many of the species are parasites of the abomasa and small intestine of ruminants.
