             Swangeriidae Jairajpuri, 1964

Differ from nematodes in the Belondiridae by the usually asymmetrical odontostyle and; tail long to filiform.

Differ from those in the Dorylaimellidae by the non-flanged odontophore, the lack of perioral sclerotized platelets and the absence of glandular pores in the lateral field.

In a study of the muscular sheath surrounding the enlarged basal portion of the esopahgus, Hechler (1969) emended the description of the superfamily Belondiroidea (Thorne, 1964) as follows: "Esophageal expansion surrounded by a sheath of muscle bands which may lie parallel to the esophagus, spiral completely around it in a dextral or sinistral direction, or spiral slightly without completely encircling the esophagus". 

Three subfamilies recognized:

• Falcihastinae Siddiqi, 1968

  • Body length small to medium (1.8mm)

  • Lip region continuous with body contour, truncate, asymmetrical

  • odontostyle with small dorsal thorn at posterior end of aperture

  • dorsla gland posetrior, often in middle of cylindrus

  • Tail filiform in both sexes

• Roqueinae Thorne, 1964

  • Long slender body, 4-6.5mm

  • Lip region rounded

  • Odontostyle thin

  • dorsal esophageal gland located in anterior position

  • Female tail long, male tail short

• Swangeriinae Jairajpuri, 1964

  • Small to large, slender nematodes.

  •  Lip region amalgamated, sometimes asymmetrical.

  • Cardia elongate.

  • Females didelphic

  • Males and females with elongate to filiform tail.

  •  Odontostyle longer than width of the lip rcgion.

  • Spiral muscle sheath around bulb sinistral.

  • Cardia elongate-cylindrical, with intestine attached to its posterior end.
