Classification:

      Tylenchida
       Tylenchina
        Tylenchoidea
         Anguinidae

          Halenchus Cobb, 1933

Type species of the genus: Halenchus fucicola (de Man & Barton, 1892) Cobb, 1933

Cobb erected the genus Halenchus to accommodate Tylenchus fucicola de Man & Barton, 1892 and T. mediterranea Micoletzky, 1922 and designated Halenchus fucicola (de Man & Barton, 1892) Cobb, 1933 as type species of the new genus (Tarjan, 1957).

Barton (1892) described galls on seaweed (Ascophyllum nodosum) on the coast of Scotland. The galls contained numerous nematodes which were sent to J.G. de Man who described them as Tylenchus fucicola, the first known marine tylenchid (Coles, 1958).

Hirschmanniella mexicana and and H. zoostericola were once placed in Halenchus. However, Halenchus differs from Hirschmanniella by shape of labial area, stylet more slender, median bulb not well defined, monovarial female gonad, large sperms in tubular elongate spermatheca, and tail shape.

Distribution:

Marine nematodes. Reported from coasts of Scotland, England, Norway and USA (Coles, 1958).

The marine habitat of Halenchus is unique to Anguinidae. In Tylenchina, only some Hirschmanniella spp. (Pratylenchidae) are known marine nematodes.
